  • Turf doesn’t count toward the landscaping Dacono requires on new development.
  • Much of Dacono sits on clay that shrinks and swells, so base prep matters most.

Common questions.

Can I turf my whole Dacono yard?

As far as the City’s landscape article goes, yes on a detached-house lot: Section 16-651 exempts single-family detached homes, so the limits come from your HOA’s design rules. On a subdivision, HOA or business site the article covers, synthetic turf can’t meet its landscaping requirements.

Are there watering restrictions in Dacono in 2026?

No mandatory ones. The City asks residents to use water efficiently and avoid unnecessary waste.

Is Dacono on clay?

Much of it is. Weld loam, a high shrink-swell soil, covers nearly half of the area sampled around central Dacono.

Sections 16-651 and 16-657(g)Only in Dacono

Dacono won’t count synthetic turf as required landscaping, and its landscape article skips the detached house.

Dacono Municipal Code 16-657(g), from Ordinance No. 787 in 2014, says artificial plants and synthetic turfs may not be used to meet the requirements of the city’s landscaping article. That article covers new development and redevelopment, planned unit developments and a residential subdivision’s streetscapes, open space, parks and HOA property, and Section 16-651 exempts single-family detached homes from it.

Ordinance 1016, passed unanimously on May 11, 2026, rewrote the article’s turf section: turf and artificial turf may go only in functional recreational use areas, such as playgrounds, sports fields and picnic areas, and anywhere else they count as nonfunctional and are barred on multifamily properties of 12 or more units and on commercial, institutional, industrial and common interest community property. Colorado’s own ban on nonfunctional turf in new commercial and HOA common landscapes sits underneath.

So on a site the article covers, plan the required plants first and keep turf to the areas people use. Behind a detached house, the city article sets no landscaping for turf to miss; your HOA’s design rules are what apply.

Weld loam

Nearly half of central Dacono is Weld loam, a high shrink-swell soil.

Soil surveys around central Dacono map Weld loam over nearly half of the area sampled, and NRCS rates the Weld series as limited for building because of shrink-swell.

The Colorado Geological Survey lists irrigation water soaking into the soil next to foundations among the landscaping problems on expansive ground, so a turf base in Dacono should shed water away from the house.

The largest hail NOAA logged near Dacono from 2011 through 2025 was 1.75 inches, on August 4, 2020.

Small lotsOnly in Dacono

The median Dacono house lot is about 6,218 square feet.

The statewide parcel file counts 758 house lots in Glens at Dacono, with a median near 5,569 square feet; Sweetgrass, Sharpe and Autumn Valley Ranch are the other big neighborhoods. Eagle Meadow is the acreage exception, with a median lot near 26,894 square feet.

The state’s district map puts 23 metro districts in Dacono, 11 formed in 2018 or later, and 10 of them belong to the Pinnacle Farms family.

C-BT and NISPOnly in Dacono

Dacono’s water starts with Colorado-Big Thompson shares and a stake in NISP.

Dacono’s primary water source is Colorado-Big Thompson shares, it takes part in the Northern Integrated Supply Project, and it buys treated water from Central Weld County Water District. Northern Water set the 2026 C-BT quota at 0.8 acre-feet per unit.

The city has no mandatory watering restrictions in place and asks residents to use water efficiently.

Colorado law · the same in every town

On a detached home, an HOA can shape backyard turf. It can’t ban it.

Colorado law says an HOA's landscaping rules may not prohibit artificial turf in the backyard of a detached single-family home, although the HOA can still adopt design and aesthetic guidelines.

ASSOCIATIONS MAY ADOPT AND ENFORCE DESIGN OR AESTHETIC GUIDELINES OR RULES THAT APPLY TO DROUGHT-TOLERANT VEGETATIVE OR NONVEGETATIVE LANDSCAPES … EXCEPT THAT THE GUIDELINES OR RULES MUST: (A) NOT PROHIBIT THE USE OF NONVEGETATIVE TURF GRASS IN THE BACKYARD OF A UNIT OWNER'S PROPERTY

  • Homes that share a wall

For attached single-family homes that share a wall, such as townhomes, Colorado law lets an HOA restrict artificial turf to rear yards only.

    C.R.S. 38-33.3-106.5(1)(i)(I)(A)
  • Front yards

Colorado law requires each HOA to pre-approve at least 3 water-wise garden designs for front yards, while its artificial-turf protection covers backyards only.

    C.R.S. 38-33.3-106.5(1)(i.5)(II)
  • Special districts

Colorado law makes unenforceable any HOA covenant or special-district rule that prohibits artificial turf in the backyard of a residential property, except for attached homes and timeshare associations.

    C.R.S. 37-60-126(11)(a.5)
  • If an HOA ignores it

If an HOA knowingly violates these Colorado landscaping protections, the homeowner must give written notice and 45 days to cure before suing for up to $500 or actual damages, whichever is greater.
