Dog potty areas on artificial turf: whether dogs can go on it, where to put the spot, and cleanup

01Does dog poop ruin artificial turf?

Not by itself. A firm pile lifts off the blades and leaves them as they were. The trouble comes from what stays behind:

• CSU Extension’s PlantTalk Colorado calls pet feces and urine deposits on turf “problematic,” because artificial surfaces “do not naturally disinfect themselves by biological means like a living lawn does” (PlantTalk Colorado 1537).
• One pet-turf maker’s care instructions say waste left in the turf slows its drainage and, if nobody treats it, becomes “the source of odor or unclean conditions” (K9Grass care instructions).
• Soft stool and smears sink between the blades into the infill, the sand or granules that hold the blades upright, where a scoop can’t reach. Which infill copes with dogs is in our guide to dog turf infill.

There is a health reason not to let it sit, too. The CDC says roundworm eggs in dog poop need 2 to 4 weeks outdoors to become infective and can then survive “for months, or even years,” and it advises picking up pet waste daily (CDC). 02Where should the dog’s potty spot go?

Pick one spot and train the dog to it, so the cleanup happens in one corner instead of across the whole yard. Ohio State University’s Indoor Pet Initiative advises taking a dog “to the same place to eliminate every time”: the dog learns the place by sight and later by smell, and dogs “generally like to eliminate where they have done so before” (Ohio State). While you train, take the dog out on a leash, so the reward comes the moment it finishes.

If the turf isn’t in yet, draw the potty spot on the plan before the base goes in. It decides where water has to leave the base and how far the hose has to reach. Pet turf covers what else goes into a dog yard.

03How do you clean up after a pickup?

1. Pick up solids at least daily, with a bag or a scooper. The turf maker’s instructions say “the sooner the better,” and “the more dogs there are, the more important this is.”
2. Look at the blades. If the pile came up clean, you’re done.
3. If it smeared, the same instructions say to “pick up all that you can, rinse with a hose, and treat with a bacterial enzyme.” Get the solids off first: they also say not to rinse solid waste into the grass.
4. Let the enzyme sit. The enzyme works better the longer it stays on, the maker says, and early evening is a good time to treat outdoor turf. Treat after 6 p.m. and you are also outside the 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. window that Fort Collins’ voluntary 2026 Water Shortage Watch asked residents to keep lawn watering out of. Whether a turf rinse counts as watering is in do you have to water artificial turf.

04What about diarrhea, baked-on residue and frozen piles?

• Diarrhea. Lift everything you can with bags or paper towels before any water touches it; water spreads loose stool through the blades and down into the infill. Then rinse, apply the enzyme, leave it on, and rinse again. If the spot still smells after a few rounds, a deeper cleaning is the next step.
• Baked on. A smear missed on a hot afternoon dries hard onto the blades. Soak it with the hose and give it a few minutes to soften before you lift it, then treat it with the enzyme like any other spot.
• Frozen. The Fort Collins station averages 150 days a year with a low at or below 32°F. A frozen pile usually comes up whole, but a rinse on a freezing evening turns to ice in the turf, so save rinsing for a day above freezing. Piles buried by a snowfall reappear at the thaw; pick up before a storm when you can.

05Where does the bagged poop go?

In the trash. Fort Collins’ recycling guide says “Pet waste should be disposed of in the trash” (Fort Collins Recycling A to Z), and the CDC’s advice is the same: bagged and put in the trash. Loveland’s animal code points the same way; its waste-removal section describes picked-up waste going “in an appropriate trash container” (Loveland 6.20.050).

Never into the gutter or a storm drain. Fort Collins Utilities names “pet wastes” among the pollutants rain and snowmelt wash into stormwater, which flows to the creeks and the Poudre River “without treatment by a water reclamation facility” (Fort Collins Utilities). That is also why the solids come off before the hose comes out.
