Fire pits, grills and fireworks on artificial turf: what melts, and what the local rules allow

01Will turf catch fire, or does it just melt?

Mostly it melts. The blades are plastic, so a spark or a hot object usually leaves a fused, melted patch rather than a flame.

• Embers and ash. SYNLawn’s care manual says a lit cigarette “cannot ignite the turf” but fuses the tips of the fibers together, and tells owners to keep cigarettes, fireworks and open flames away from it (SYNLawn).
• Hot things set down. Integriturf’s installation guide warns against setting hot tools or other hot items on turf, because they melt the fibers (Integriturf). A portable fire pit’s base, a grill lid or an ash tray does the same.
• Drips. Grease and coals fall straight down from a grill.

How turf behaves in an open flame, what the flammability line on a spec sheet means, and turf near the house on a wildfire-prone lot are in is artificial turf flammable. One local note: Firestone’s turf standard requires all turf materials to be non-flammable, without naming a test (Firestone Development Code 16.6.4). A spot that has already melted gets patched.

02How far from the house does a fire pit have to be?

It depends on your fire district, not on your town’s turf rules. None of these pages names artificial turf, so whether a lawn counts as a “combustible” is the district’s call; ask it before you place the pit.

Three details the table can’t hold:

• Windsor and Severance. WSFR lists one- and two-family homes as an exception to its cleared-ground line without saying how far the exception reaches, so ask WSFR. Inside town limits it allows burning only in grills, portable cooking appliances, manufactured (“commercial”) fire pits, clay or ceramic fire pots and similar devices no bigger than 3 by 2 feet with a spark arrestor (WSFR).
• Greeley. The city’s fire pages we read set no fire-pit distance. In Greeley, ask Greeley Fire before you build one.
• Grills. Grill rules measure to the house, not the lawn. Poudre Fire Authority keeps charcoal, gas and pellet grills off combustible decks and balconies and 10 feet from combustible construction (PFA). Berthoud Fire’s version says 15 feet but exempts one- and two-family homes, townhomes included.

Wind matters more here than the table suggests. NOAA’s storm records list an 84 mph gust in Loveland in the windstorm of November 2019 (NOAA), and an ember doesn’t need anything close to that to clear the pit and land on the lawn.

03Can I use the fire pit or grill during fire restrictions?

Gas usually keeps working longer than wood. The county sets restrictions for unincorporated land and each city or town sets its own inside its limits, and both change with the weather. Not legal advice; check on the day.

• Unincorporated Larimer County was under Stage 1 on September 25, 2026. The county says Stage 1 may still allow fires in permanent fire pits and gas grills, while a fire ban prohibits all open burning, fire pits, fireworks and charcoal grills included (Larimer County).
• Fort Collins has been in Stage 1 since May 18, 2026, until rescinded (PFA). Under Stage 1 the City’s code still allows gas- or liquid-fueled fire pits, grills and heaters, and clean, dry wood or charcoal in approved portable fire pits and chimineas (City Code).
• A tighter stage. From May 6 to May 26, 2026, Larimer’s increased restrictions for unincorporated areas banned charcoal, pellet and wood grills and wood fires in permanent fireplaces, while gas- and liquid-fueled fires, fire pits included, stayed allowed, as Berthoud Fire posted them (Berthoud Fire).

So a propane or natural-gas fire table stays usable through more stages than a wood pit or a charcoal kettle, and it throws no embers onto the lawn. In Greeley and other Weld County towns, check the town and the fire district rather than Larimer’s page.

04What should go under a fire pit or grill in a turf yard?

Something that can’t melt, with the turf stopping at its edge. The fire codes above don’t mention turf, but they point the same way: Loveland Fire Rescue Authority wants wood-burning appliances “situated on a clear and level surface so that the appliance cannot tip over,” and WSFR asks for the ground within 5 feet of a fire’s base to be cleared of combustibles such as grass.

• A pad for the fire pit. Pavers, flagstone, concrete or gravel, sized so sparks and ash land on it. WSFR’s ring makes a sensible size: the pit plus 5 feet all round.
• The patio or a pad for the grill, so ash and drips never reach turf.
• A spark screen. LFRA, Berthoud Fire and WSFR all want a screen or spark arrestor on wood-burning pits.
• Gas lines. In LFRA’s area, a fire pit on a permanent gas line needs a building permit. Colorado 811 doesn’t mark private lines such as gas lines to backyard grills (Colorado 811), so mark any gas run before turf work starts; see preparing for turf installation day.
• The join. Where turf meets the pad it needs an edge that holds: edging options. For turf strips set between pavers, see turf between pavers; for how much of the yard goes to hardscape, mixing turf, rock and plant beds.

If a fire feature is in the plan, ask the installer:

1. “Where does the turf stop around the fire pit, and what holds that edge?” A good answer names a noncombustible border and a fixed edge, not turf run up to the pit.
2. “Is there a gas line in the work area, and who marks it?” A good answer: private lines get found and marked before anyone digs.
3. “How big is the pad, and why?” A good answer starts from the pit and your fire district’s rules, not a stock square.

05Are fireworks allowed, and can I set them off on turf?

It depends on the town. Statewide, Loveland Fire Rescue Authority sums it up: fireworks that explode or leave the ground aren’t permissible for sale or use anywhere in Colorado outside professional displays (LFRA). Towns then decide about the rest. Not legal advice; as read in September 2026:

• Fort Collins prohibits fireworks at all times, apart from permitted displays (City Code).
• Windsor makes it unlawful to possess, use or explode any fireworks in town (Town Code).
• Loveland allows permissible fireworks such as sparklers, fountains and spinners in city limits and unincorporated Larimer County.
• Greeley lets anyone 16 or older use permissible fireworks (City Code); illegal ones carry fines of up to $1,000.
• Berthoud allows only permissible fireworks to be set off (Town Code).
• Elsewhere, read your town’s code, and remember a fire ban can stop legal fireworks too.

Where they’re legal, keep them off the lawn. Greeley’s fire department asks for a clear area at least ten feet across “made of mineral soil or pavement” around fireworks (Greeley Fire), and turf is neither. Use the driveway, keep a hose ready, skip fireworks entirely under a Red Flag Warning or Fire Weather Watch, and soak spent ones in a pail of water. The next morning, walk the lawn for melted spots; a small one is a patch job.
