Snow on artificial turf: when to shovel, when to wait, and what not to put on it

01Should I clear snow off artificial turf or let it melt?

Let it melt, most of the time. The Synthetic Turf Council’s maintenance guidelines say snow and ice should generally be left to melt and drain off on their own (STC guidelines). Northern Colorado makes waiting easy, because big snows are few and winter afternoons are mild:

Most snowfalls here are small. Each station averages between 11.6 and 14.4 days a year with an inch or more of new snow, but only one or two with five inches or more. Loveland’s Public Works says most of the city’s snow events bring two to five inches, and sunshine and warmer days after a storm often melt what is left on the roads (City of Loveland). Fort Collins leaves residential streets unplowed partly because of “frequent sunny conditions that help melt snow naturally” (City of Fort Collins). The Colorado Climate Center credits the thin air for letting more sun through in winter, and chinook winds for greatly moderating winter temperatures near the mountains (Colorado Climate Center).

Clear snow when you have a reason to:

• A path you walk every day, or the dog’s spot. Motz, an infill maker, names exactly these two (Motz). For a dog yard, see pet turf.
• Deep snow piling up. Synthetic Grass Warehouse warns that piled, compacted snow turns to ice, and says to take packed snow off by hand or with a plastic shovel before it does (Synthetic Grass Warehouse).

Field owners take it seriously too: Thompson School District’s rules for its synthetic turf field prohibit unauthorized snow removal (Thompson School District).

02What can I use to move snow without damaging the turf?

Something that can’t cut or scrape, used so it never quite reaches the blades. The field guidance is to leave a thin layer. The STC says a plow blade used on turf should be guarded with PVC pipe or rubber tips and set to leave a quarter to half an inch of snow to avoid surface damage, with the rest left to melt, since brushing it off may also remove infill. FieldTurf, a sports-turf maker, tells field owners to leave a crust of 1 to 1.5 inches for the sun to melt (FieldTurf). In a yard, the same idea works: push the snow off with a plastic shovel held a little high, then let the sun finish.

Don’t chip ice or brush turf that is frozen hard. Synthetic Grass Warehouse says frozen blades turn brittle and can be damaged underfoot, and a stiff broom is no gentler. Wait for a sunny afternoon: the average December–February high is at least 43.2°F at every station in the table.

03Can I use a snowblower on artificial turf?

Not a single-stage one. On a single-stage machine the rubber-edged rotor that scoops the snow runs on the surface. Toro’s manual for one says it is designed mainly for paved surfaces, is “not designed for clearing gravel surfaces,” and warns that its rotor blades can throw stones (Toro Power Clear manual). Sand and granular infill are the same kind of loose material, so expect a single-stage blower to throw infill and scuff blades (our reading of the manual, not Toro’s statement about turf).

A two-stage blower rides on adjustable skids. Toro’s manual says its auger must be held above the ground by the skids, and to lower the skids further on gravel so the machine doesn’t pick up rocks (Toro Power Max manual). If you use one on turf, set it as you would for gravel, so the housing and scraper ride well above the blades and leave a layer of snow behind.

Timing matters too. FieldTurf says frozen infill lets a field be plowed without displacing much of it, so pushing slush across thawed turf is the riskier moment.

04Is ice melt safe on artificial turf?

Rock salt is the one to keep off it. What the sources say about the common de-icers:

SYNLawn’s line is broader: rock salt and chemical de-icers can degrade turf fibers and backing. So put none on turf on purpose. When some lands there anyway, FieldTurf’s practice for fields is to flush the residue off with water once it has been above freezing for five days in a row. 05How does de-icer end up on turf, and how do I keep it off?

Mostly from the sidewalk you have to clear. Not legal advice: here are the rules as each city or town states them.

Sources: Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Windsor. In another town, it depends on the local code: ask your town’s public works or code enforcement office.

So the snow, and whatever you spread on the walk, ends up in the yard. To keep it off the turf:

• Spread de-icer on the concrete only, by hand or with a spreader aimed away from the turf edge.
• If an HOA or metro district contractor clears your walk, ask what they spread and where they pile the snow.
• Watch an edge that meets a plowed street. Plow slush carries the road’s de-icer: a magnesium chloride brine and Ice Slicer, a mix of magnesium, sodium and potassium chlorides, in Loveland; Ice Buster, a rock salt made mainly of sodium, magnesium and calcium chlorides, in Windsor. Rinse that edge after a thaw too.

Planning new turf? Ask the installer where the snow from your sidewalk and driveway will go. A good answer names a spot for the piles and a strip of rock or concrete between the salted walk and the turf.

06Why does my turf look flat after the snow melts?

Weight. Motz says snow can flatten the blades and sometimes mat them. Synthetic Grass Warehouse says mild matting from snow should bounce back on its own over time, and faster with cross-brushing.
