Does artificial turf fade? Over time, yes: what 5,000 feet adds and what UV tests measure
Why turf fades faster near 5,000 feet, what a 3,000-hour UV test and a gray-scale grade mean, how to tell fade from matting, and whether paint helps.

Every artificial lawn fades eventually, because sunlight breaks down the plastic its blades are made of. What changes from yard to yard is the pace. This page works out how much stronger the sun is here, what the UV numbers on a turf spec sheet mean, and how to tell fading from the other things that make turf look tired.
How much stronger is the sun at Northern Colorado’s elevation?
About 9% stronger in UV than at sea level, by the EPA’s own rule. Its explanation of the UV Index says “UV intensity increases about 6% per kilometer elevation above sea level” (EPA). NOAA publishes the elevation of every station it uses for climate normals (NOAA NCEI), so the arithmetic for the corridor is short:
| NOAA station | Elevation | In feet | Extra UV over sea level, at 6% per km |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greeley UNC | 1,437.1 m | 4,715 | 8.6% |
| Fort Collins 4E | 1,499.6 m | 4,920 | 9.0% |
| Longmont 2 ESE | 1,508.8 m | 4,950 | 9.1% |
| Fort Collins | 1,525.2 m | 5,004 | 9.2% |
| Loveland 2N | 1,548.4 m | 5,080 | 9.3% |
The EPA applies its rule as a straight percentage (its worked example multiplies by 1.06 for a site 1 kilometer up), and so does this table. The spread across the corridor is small. The gap between here and a coastal lawn is not.
The Colorado Climate Center says the state’s “thin atmosphere allows greater penetration of solar radiation” and that sunburn is a problem “due to the intense high-elevation sunlight” (Colorado Climate Center). Turf gets the same sun your skin does, every clear day of the year.
What actually makes turf fade?
Ultraviolet light breaking the plastic down, slowed by additives and sped up by heat:
- UV breaks the polymer. A University of Johannesburg study of polyethylene sports turf found that absorbed UV “causes a break in the intermolecular bonds of the polyethylene, which leads to cracking,” and that color change follows extended exposure (University of Johannesburg).
- Stabilizers slow it, and you can’t see them. Manufacturers blend UV stabilizers into the yarn. A 2020 review for NTNU, Norway’s university of science and technology, notes that the stabilizer is kept “confidential from producers” and that its composition and quantity vary. Two turfs that look alike on install day can age differently.
- Heat adds to it. The same review names “UV radiation with additional surface heating” as the likeliest main cause of fiber breakdown. NOAA’s Greeley UNC station averages 58.3 days a year at or above 90°F, and its Fort Collins station 29.5 (NOAA, Greeley UNC; NOAA, Fort Collins). What that heat means for bare feet and paws is in how hot artificial turf gets.
The yarn type matters less than its stabilizer package. The Synthetic Turf Council tells buyers to “beware of unsupported claims against a certain yarn polymer type,” because polyethylene, nylon and polypropylene can all provide color retention and UV resistance (Synthetic Turf Council). The rest of that comparison is in nylon vs polyethylene turf.
What do the UV numbers on a spec sheet mean?
The Synthetic Turf Council’s 2013 buying guidelines ask for two yarn results, each “validated in report by an Independent Test Lab” after 3,000 hours under UVA lamps in a test chamber:
| Measured after 3,000 hours of UVA | STC minimum | Test method |
|---|---|---|
| Color change | better than Gray Scale 3 | ASTM D2616-12 |
| Yarn tensile strength | loses no more than 50% | FIFA/EN 13864 |
The gray scale runs from step 5, no visible difference, down to step 1. ASTM’s table puts step 3 at a color difference (CIELAB ΔE) of 3.4 and step 1 at 13.6 (ASTM D2616-12). A yarn that meets the STC minimum has shifted less than a step-3 difference after the test, and it may have lost up to half its strength and still pass.
What the hours don’t tell you is years in a yard. The NTNU review quotes the ISO standard for lab light exposure of plastics: relating lab results to real use “is difficult because of variability in both types of exposure,” and the review treats accelerated results as a worst case. If a seller converts chamber hours into years in Colorado, ask how.
When you compare products, ask for:
- The independent lab report for the exact product, not for a family of yarns.
- The test method and the hours, so two reports compare like with like.
- The gray-scale grade and the share of tensile strength the yarn kept.
What else belongs on that sheet is in the turf spec sheet guide, and the rest of the interview is in questions to ask a turf installer.
How fast will my turf fade?
No honest source gives one number, and the NTNU review found no research on long-term fiber degradation. The pace comes down to the stabilizers in the yarn, which only the lab report hints at, and the hours of direct sun on each part of the yard. An open south- or west-facing lawn takes far more UV than turf in the shadow of the house, a fence or a tree.
Two ways to keep your own record:
- Keep the sample. The Synthetic Turf Council tells buyers to “keep the synthetic grass sample you select” and compare it with the product delivered. Stored indoors, the same sample becomes your color reference years later.
- Watch a shaded strip. Turf along a north fence or under a deck edge ages slower than the open lawn. The difference between the two is your fade.
In Firestone, the town code says turf materials “shall be protected with a minimum of an eight (8) year warranty” (Firestone Development Code 16.6.4). Not legal advice. What a manufacturer’s paperwork covers when the color goes, and how pro-rating works, is in our guide to turf coverage terms. Total life, with hail and freeze-thaw counted, is in how long artificial turf lasts.
Is it fading, matting, thatch or heat damage?
Turf that looks tired isn’t always faded. Check what you see against this:
| What you see | Likely cause | Where to go next |
|---|---|---|
| Blades a lighter, duller green in the sunniest part of the yard, brighter in shade | UV fade | this page |
| Blades lying flat along paths, the same green when you brush them up | Matting | matted artificial turf |
| Tan or brown curled fibers low in the pile | Thatch yarn, there by design | what makes turf look real |
| Shriveled or melted streaks near a window or glass door | Reflected heat | turf melting near the house |
| Stiff tips that snap, short stubs, loose fibers in the broom | Advanced UV breakdown | repair or replace |
The brown is the one that fools people. Many turf products carry a tan thatch yarn on purpose, and Firestone’s code even requires turf colors to include “a tan thatch layer.”
Can faded turf be painted?
Only as a short-lived cosmetic fix. One maker of paint for synthetic sports turf says it is “tough for conventional paints to adhere permanently” to slick polyethylene or polypropylene blades, and that even its permanent line paint lasts “from 3 months to 6 months” depending on use (US Specialty Coatings). That paint is sold for lines and logos on sports fields, not for recoloring a lawn. Paint does nothing for strength either: if the tips have gone brittle, the yarn under the color is still breaking down.
Firestone’s code wants turf “maintained in a manner to mimic healthy living turf,” with no “discolorations” or “excessive wear,” and says turf “shall be replaced after the life expectancy has been reached.” Not legal advice. In the other towns it depends on the town code and your HOA’s covenants: ask your town’s Planning department, and read the covenants’ maintenance section. When paint won’t do, when to replace artificial turf walks through the call, and Firestone’s rules sit on the Firestone area page.
Questions
Questions about turf in Colorado weather.
Does turf fade in winter too?
More slowly. The EPA’s UV model sets the sun’s strength by latitude, day of year and time of day, so a low December sun delivers less UV than a June noon, and turf buried under snow is shaded for as long as the snow lies. Bare turf on a clear winter afternoon is still taking some UV.
Do UV-protectant sprays stop turf from fading?
We found no independent test showing that a spray-on product slows fading of turf yarn. The protection that counts is blended into the plastic when the yarn is made, which is why the lab report for the product matters more than anything applied afterward.
Will a repair patch match the turf around it?
Often not at first. A patch cut from a new roll has had no sun, while the lawn around it may have had years of it, so the two can read as different greens. Firestone’s code asks for repairs that result in a “consistent appearance with the existing artificial turf”. Our guide to patching turf covers the repair itself.
Can my HOA complain about faded turf?
It can if your covenants set a maintenance standard for landscaping, so read that section before you assume turf is exempt. Our HOA approval guide covers what Colorado law says an association can and can’t require of turf in the first place.
